Our courses are PEMA approved for credit through PA Train and can be approved for continuing education credits for veterinarians and vet techs.

Emergency Sheltering for Owned Animals – 8 hour

One day course provides the basics of emergency sheltering for animals including types of animal shelters, legal concerns, introduction to animal sheltering framework, and real-life scenarios. Ideal for shelters and rescues interested in planning for emergencies, volunteers who work in emergency sheltering for humans, and provides half of the 16-hour training requirement for PART volunteers.

Course cost: $50 per person

Basic Emergency Response for Animals – 8 hour

One day course providing an introduction to emergency response for animals, how animal response fits within human responses, basic incident command, and animal behavior and handling. Minimum course requirement for all PART volunteers, also a great start for anyone who is interested in working to support emergency responders in pet deployments and provides half of the 16 hour training requirement for PART volunteers. 

Course cost: $50 per person

Emergency Response for Animals – for Emergency Responders – 2 hour

An introductory level course to train emergency responders on the basics of animal handling and behavior to orient first responders to the considerations for encountering animals.

Course cost: $50 per person

Pet First Aid – 8 hour

Teaches the basics of assisting an injured animal and the safety hazards of doing so. Learn pet CPR and how to check for illness and injury and rule out their causes.

Course cost: $50 per person

Pet First Aid for Emergency Responders – 2 hour

Large Animal Handling

Awareness, Operations, and Technical level courses are available to teach firefighters, emergency responders, animal control, and law enforcement officers how to approach, capture, and move large animals. This class will cover how to support a horse down in stall, corralling pigs or goats, and the safety concerns that all responders should be aware of when handling large animals.

Course cost: $200 per person, minimum class size 10 

 

All courses can be scaled down to fit tighter time frames or scaled up to include live exercises. Remote and in person options available!

 

Basic Training for CART Membership

The FEMA independent study course is for farmers, extension agents, emergency managers, and others who have interests in the livestock industry. It describes the various hazards that animals can face and how to mitigate them, as well as how to respond to an actual disaster.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
Training makes people better prepared to respond to and cope with the aftermath of a disaster. IT furthers the process of citizens understanding their responsibility in preparing for disaster and also increases their ability to safely help themselves, their family and their neighbors.

FEMA Independent Study Course List
This website provides training courses from IS-1 to IS-800 – certificates are issued by FEMA after exams are passed and CEU’s can be earned.

Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN)
The Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) is a collaborative multi-state effort by Extension Services across the country to improve the delivery of services to citizens affected by disasters and it links Extension educators from across the U.S. and various disciplines, enabling them to use and share resources to reduce the impact of disasters.

Florida AgSafe Network
This provides educational information for making the agricultural workplace safer and healthier and also contains materials relevant for disasters and emergency situations. It includes the monthly newsletter, “Safety News & Notes” written by Carol J. Lehtola.

Center for Food Security and Public Health
CFSPH efforts to increase national preparedness for accidental or intentional introduction of disease agents that threaten food production or public health. It prepares and distributes educational materials on bioterrorism and agroterrorism agents to veterinarians, public health officials and medical professionals. (@ Iowa State Univ)

Additional Training

The Red Cross Pet First Aid App has resources developed by experts on how to maintain a pet’s health and what to do during emergencies.

    • Pet owners learn about signs of a healthy dog or cat so they can recognize health problems early. Catching potential illness or injury early can make a huge difference in treatment success.
    • The app gives users instant access to information including step-by-step instructions, videos and images for more than 25 common first aid and emergency situations for dogs and cats.
    • App users will learn how to treat wounds, control bleeding and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies. Information about administering medication, behavioral and nutritional information is also included.
    • Additional topics include burns, car accidents, falls and what to do for cold- and heat-related emergencies.
